They arrived at the city late and went to an inn, leaving Hadrius’ horse there. Cassius dispatched a message, and they went for a meal. The inn was not of the ill type but frequented by sailors, still, travelers of all kinds. Just a few glances at them, the men shying from Clavius and Marius’ scars. Their eyes met, smiling.

Clavius clasped his arm over the table. “We look like rogue bandits with our faces… pirates… all the better. Let them shit their pants.”

A slave brought a huge plate of fuming semolina, with slabs of lamb meat and cooked vegetables in a thick sauce, the oriental aromas filling the air.

Clavius rubbed his hands together, helping himself. “Oh… this is going to be so good…”

Kyle served Marius, but he stopped him before he could pile more food on his plate. “No, love, enough…”

“But…”

“My stomach won’t take it…”

Kyle sighed, but let go, and they ate heartily, Marius still cautious, not even finishing that meagre portion, the tastes too much, filling his eyes with tears. Kyle reached for his hand and handed him a cup of water, which he downed eagerly, a grateful light in his eye.

Cassius rose. “Let’s retire. Tomorrow, we set sail early.”

They went to the stairs as a party entered the inn. Three men, looking around, their eyes searching the men’s faces in that large room.
